Pop: Shakira

I've discovered that most of the visitors at La Onda are male, so let's have a post about the lovely Shakira ;) Hips Don't Lie, her duet with Wyclef Jean, is quickly becoming the world hit we predicted it would be. Anyway, here's the Spanish version of the song: it's called "Sera Sera", and as usual she sings a lot better in her native language. Wyclef on the other hand... ;)
At least two artists wrongly accuse Shakira of plagiarism. Seems she did ask for permission after all... Though if you listen to this (Jerry Rivera- Amores Como El Nuestro) and this (Fernando Villalona - Baila en la Calle), you can't argue with them: it's exactly the same.

We all know Shakira's recent albums (Fijacion Oral 1, Oral Fixation 2, and Laundry Service) but you can find some real jewels on her previous work. MTV Unplugged (2000), Donde Estan Los Ladrones (1998) and Piez Descalzos (her 1996 breakthrough album) emphasize a more sensitive, more girlish Shakira. If you never heard Ojos Así (where she honours her Libanese roots with a part sung in Arab) or latin pop classic Inevitable, you haven't heard the real Shakira.

But the other day I found this remarkable post on Raw Like Sashimi, an Indian(!) music blog. It's Shakira's 1991 debut album "Magia", out of print and ripped from an original copy (in bad quality though). A few days later he posted more: the 1993 album "Peligro", also out of print.
Both albums are very, very cheesy, with an 80s-early 90s beat much like Miami Sound Machine used back in the days, and cheap synthesizer tunes. Though her vocal talents are already very obvious, it's clear Shakiras only a girl here, singing about boys, love and her quince años fiesta. Too bad the songs are so outdated.

(By the way, I don't like mp3 blogs that offer full album downloads (it's against the principle of "discovering music") but in this case it's perfectly legal as they're out of print!)

I'm female ( ;

I love Shakira, but I prefer her spanish songs and I agree with your statement that she usually sings better in spanish. Her voice, when she sings in spanish, sounds so much more beautiful too, I think.

And I have "Inevitable", I really like the song, just how I like "Hips Don't Lie/Sera Sera". But what I really love, is "No" which is sung in spanish. Probably one of my favorites by her.

"No" is one of the best on Fijacion Oral indeed.. together with "Dia Especiál", not coincidentially two songs with Gustavo Cerati...

Hi there,
This is my first comment to one of your blogposts, but i've been reading ur blog for some time now. I like it.
I'm a big fan of south american music myself. But i have a small preferance for Brazilian music, like bossa nova, bossatronic or even brazilian funk.
Your blog gave me the opportunity to learn some new bands like Ojos de Brujo, got me the cd so i can listen to it while i'm driving true spain this summer. hehe.

Keep up the good work,
Bart

Hey Bart, thanks for the compliments, glad you enjoy the site.
I like Brazilian music a lot too! But I know absolutely nothing about it, so I can't post about it either ;) I'm mostly into the old stuff though, 60 and 70s bossa nova.

Hey, its nice to see a quick reply. My knowledge about brazilian music isn't that big either. Most of the time i try to listen to a radiostation that broadcasts brazilian music, mostly from http://www.live365.com/cgi-bin/directory.cgi?genre=brazilian (If i ain't allowed to put links, feel free to delete). mostly just pick a channel and listen. If you have any other suggestions for internet radio's, feel free to let me know :). To bad i can't listen to radio streams all the time, cuz i have to share my internet connection and beglian providers don't offer alot of bandwidth :)

Hi Chapín! I found your blog while looking for some new music for my radio show. Well done! It's great. Check out the show on http://www.wickedlatino.co.nz
We go live on friday nights in Auckland, New Zealand and then we post the show in the site.
Talking about Shakira and plagiarism, I think "Underneath your clothes" sounds very similar to "Eternal Flame" by The Bangles...

@bart: you can post all the links you want! too bad I don't have much time to listen to web radios (certainly with the exams period this month), I bet you could discover a lot of new stuff there.

@wickedlatino: that sounds great :) keep up the good work

Why was there no follow on bankruptcy then? The bailout of AIG FP went to (wow power leveling) hedge funds that bound credit swaps on Lehman failing or others betting on rating (wow power leveling) declines. AIG has drained over 100 billion from the government. Which had to go to (wow power leveling) those who bet on failures and downgrades. Many of whom (power leveling)were hedge funds. I-banks that had offsetting swaps needed the money from the AIG bailout or they would have been caught. Its an (wow powerleveling) insiders game and it takes just a little bit too much time for most people to think (wow gold) through where the AIG 100 billion bailout money went to, hedge funds and players, many of whom hire from the top ranks of DOJ, Fed, Treasury, etc. ZHANG XIAO CHEN
