Electronic: Mexican Institute of Sound, Los Mono
Instituto Mexicano del Sonido, in English 'Mexican Institute of Sound', is a one-man project by your favorite cut-and-paste DJ Camilo Lara (Café Tacvba, Babasonicos, ...). Two years ago, he made old latino vibes meet mad electronics for the first time on Méjico Máxico, and on follow-up Piñata that experiment is perked up a little. For example, "Escribeme Pronto" combines a crackling sample of some old chachacha record with Manu Chao madness, everything joined together by a groovy hiphop beat. Latin funk all the way, in other words! Piñata is to Mexico what Los Amigos Invisibles' Super Pop Venezuela was to Venezuela: a trendy update of traditional tunes, essential to your record collection!
More crazy electronics as we tune into Chilean party people Los Mono. Their album Somos Los Que Estamos was originally conceived as the soundtrack to a children's TV show, and the fun and playful atmosphere is one of the main assets of their musical mélange. (Notice the wordplay in the band name and album title as well, if you understand Spanish :)) "Promesas" is at the same time a funky trip to the 70s à la Amigos Invisibles, a load of delightful nonsense worthy of Plastilina Mosh, and a Daft Punk-esque dancefloor killer. Must-have!

Gracias for the Mexican Institute of Sound info! He and Nortec Collective are my fave electronica groups. I like how you described the song as having a Manu Chao madness - how true! By the way, check out Manu's new album, La Radiolina. It's really cool....and I think produced by the same company as IMS/MIS.
