Two posts in the last two months. A year-end top 10 with only 1 true 'personal discovery' (the rest was promo). A blog with no hosting and a messed up layout. And, frankly, not enough ganas to keep it going.
That's the sad balance of 2008 for La Onda Tropical. It's not that my interest and passion for latin music have faded, but the fun of writing about it is gone for sure. Blogging for me has always been cyclic - active writing (and enjoying it) followed by a pause (mostly because of lack of time) and then 'restarting' all over. This year, the pauses have been longer and the restarting seems harder each time.
So I pull the plug on what has been an extremely rewarding experience. Seeing that visitor number explode. Receiving those first well-funded comments. Getting in touch with the artists themselve. Feeling that, in a tiny dimension of humankind, my writing makes sense, contributes.
Who knows, I might start it all up again in a month or two. I won't stop listening to latin music, no way, so I'll probably feel the need to write sooner or later. Maybe over at Club Fonograma, if Carlos feels like it?
Thank you very much for reading. Listening. Interacting. I love you all and wish you the best.
I say goodbye with the most popular ánd most beautiful song of three and a half years La Onda Tropical.
Shakira - Despedida
Adios.

It's sad... but what a wonderful project Chapin! we're very thankful! for the help, and u were really the first one to believe on Club Fonograma, so it would be a pleasure to have you with us. Like I had told you before, you can stop by anytime, post about anything, do it the way you want it, hopefully you'll like it. I would love it of course if La Onda Tropical came back really soon, I know it's tough keeping up with something as rewarding while trying to get educated.
Great list by the way! It's great to see Nortec, Julieta, Aterciopelados and Calle 13 here especially!
Abrazos!
Carlos
This makes me kind of sad too... I feel sorry for not having contributed in a long while. If I had had more time, I would have loved to help Chapín out a little more. Anyways, I'm very thankful for Chapín's enthusiasm and actual knowledge of Latin music, I've discovered a whole lot of music here too. Such as this beautiful Shakira track that gives this blog ending just that little extra dramatic touch ;)
But hey, who knows: maybe in fall, when we get back from our long awaited trip to South America, we'll have loads of stuff to write about...
Thanks so much for all the music and insight, and respect to you for making a hard decision. Sincerely hope you do revive later on.
all the best and thanks again
jim
I am very sorry that you are going to stop working on this blog and hope you change your mind! I have found out about a lot of great music from this blog and have benefited greatly from it! If you decide to use another blog please post an update of the URL. Thank you for all the hard work you have put into this!
Miriam
Thanks for your heart-warming comments everyone!
Thank you indeed for the great blog and the time and effort to share. I found La Onda such a reliable way of keeping track of new latin music. I'm not only sad that this blog may no longer be updated but at a loss where to go...
a big loss ... viva la musica latina ... thanks for support chocquibtown de colombia ...paz y amor
thanks for all the good reads--
cuidate y buenos suerte!
Thanks for chiquibtown, they're kinda awesome!!! As for the list, p-mosh! really?? And no mention of concha buika and her fiery album? Que lastima.
ps. i always find it uncomfortable to include spain as 'latin'(america?). but then again lately (or forever) 'latin' music is coming around full circle by embracing un chingo of different world sounds, so soon enough we can lose that silly term.
hi justicero, I adore Buika and her unique voice, but I didn't manage to write a review, so I didn't include her. it's a fantastic album nonetheless. I'm a little biased when it comes to P Mosh, I have unrelated but very fond memories of their fun-infested previous albums from years back :)
and besides, you have to love Pervert Pop Song with Ximena Sariñana!
Hi Chapín,
I've always been a reader of "La Onda" and will surely miss it. I've discovered a few new bands thanks to your blog and bought a few albums as well.
I keep my fingers crossed that you'll be back with more sooner than later.
"It ain't over till it's over"
All the best,
Matias from (ex) Wicked Latino, Auckland, NZ
Chapin, thank you for the tunes and for all the blood, sweat and tears that went into the blog over its lifespan. Having made the same decision earlier this year, I understand the need to close the chapter. But it is only that I hope, an end to this particular chapter. Looking forward to the next one when the time is right.
So it goes
Stu (discontent / fat planet)
Thanks for your time as an anonymous but frequent reader and listener of your blog!
Good luck in all your projects and, if/when you come back with La Onda Tropical, aquí estaremos para escucharte!
Adán
Sorry you're leaving, but fully understand. You've done a great job. Suerte.
Thanks for the great work man!
Sad to see you go. This was my 'go-to' Latin music blog. I've discovered so much music (I'll be forever grateful for "Ella Menea". What a fabulous song. Choc Quib Town are also wonderful). If nothing further comes of this blog, the music will last forever. So thank you!
I enjoyed your selections!
