Anuncios

(That's Spanish for 'Annoucements'. Or 'Commercials' :))

Due to unforseen circumstances we won't be able to assist the Couleur Café festival in Brussels. We were dying to see Cuban salsa stars Los Van Van live, and the concerts of Belgian band Arsenal and zouk orchestra Kassav' were two great bonuses. But for maximum festival coverage I direct you to the always excellent Dutch-language world music blog Tropicalidad.

Chapín is off to the USA for a month of road trippin' next week. But thanks to Blogger's nifty new auto-post system you won't fall without music this time. Also, El Guïri will shine his light on two great album releases - so keep following La Onda during the summer holidays!

PS: Still no Arcangel album here, and I'm leaving tomorrow, so I'm afraid the review won't be ready until August.

La Onda Tropical Facebook Page
As MySpace is becoming more and more like Facebook (photo tagging, anyone?), and Facebook is kinda like the hot twentysomething college sister of the ugly emo teenager called MySpace, we thought: why not create our own FB Page? If you have a Facebook account, click here for the brand new La Onda Tropical Facebook Page! Now you can be our fan, send us stupid college humor videos, and see who our friends are. But beware: stalking will be punished with countless invitations for totally useless FB applications!
Of course if you're so inclined, you can always be our friend on our (still more musical and more informative) MySpace spot ;)

Also, we've updated our blogroll (under 'Links' on your right) to include some fabulous new discoveries. A roundup:

  • Turn That Shit Off A regular in our 'En La Misma Onda' posts, this blog focuses on indie culture in Mexico city. Great layout, nice pictures and some exclusive music.

  • Captain's Crate The captain spoils us with tracks from his seemingly endless vinyl collection. You'll hear funk, soul and latin music from the 1950s to the present.

  • Fat Planet Blogging new world beats (baile funk, kuduro, digital cumbia, reggaeton) from Australia. Check out the recently launched podcast Slang Tang - now we no longer have to drool over the playlist of that radio show we can't listen to anyway.

  • Je Ne Sais Pop A very active and highly informative team blog in Spanish, focusing on indie rock desde España, hip Anglo bands, and other aspects of pop culture (movies, TV, fashion, ...)

Be sure to check them out! Or keep reading La Onda, you'll come across these blogs more than often in our regular link posts.

And finally I'd like to remind you of all the possibilities to keep track of La Onda - you can read our RSS feed, use dozens of platforms (like Google or Windows Live) to subscribe to RSS, have our posts delivered by e-mail, or keep track of comments with a special comments feed.
If you're into social networking and web2.0 stuff, you can bookmark and share La Onda on Del.icio.us, Digg, Furl and countless other sites. And you can be our fan on Technorati, Last.fm, MySpace and Facebook. Whew.

Announcements

  • I think we can call our Semana Brasileira a success: between 400 and 500 daily visitors is not something we're used to here ;) We loved all your comments, the more the better!

  • The winner of the Tita Lima album 11:11 is... (drumroll).. Matt from Somerville, PA! And thanks to everyone who participated, of course.

  • El Guiri is kicking back in Mexico at the moment, and I'm leaving for Spain in a few days. So you'll have to do without new posts until the beginnings of August, when we will return in full force! You can check out the wonderful blogs in our Link List (to your right, at the bottom) to help you through this dark period ;) See ya!

Sporadic Posting

Hi there, faithful readers.

Though we're approaching the 2nd birthday of this blog, I'm now going through a period of internship and exams. El Guïri is having a stressfull last semester as well. And afterwards, we're taking a break to go to some exotic country. So posting will be sporadic, at least for the next two months.

Usually I don't think bloggers should apologize for not posting, but I just wanted to let you know, so you wouldn't think La Onda has gone dead!

PS: I also want to thank you all for commenting so actively during the last months, you always make my day with that!

All the best!

Playlist

After another web host service suspended my account, I've shortened the playlist to 10 songs. Hope you don't mind, it'll make things a bit easier for me.

I've also added a function to play all songs on the playlist at once, in your favorite mp3 player. In the sidebar, click the icon right next to "Play All", at the bottom of the playlist. For help with using the playlist in iTunes, read this page.

MySpace - Reggaeton: Don Omar, Wisin y Yandel

La Onda Tropical MySpace
La Onda Tropical is continuing on the Web 2.0 wave: we now have our own MySpace! You can go interactive on us at www.myspace.com/ la_onda_tropical. Be sure to add us as your friend, to help get our counter above the measly number of zero!

And what better song to inaugurate our fabulous new addition, than the newest Don Omar single, conveniently called "MySpace"? It's been a while since I've enjoyed plain commercial reggaeton, but this is one hot track. El Don raps like never before, Wisin y Yandel do an excellent guest performance, lyrics are simple but very effective, and all that makes a very contagious hip shaker.

Ojos de Brujo Contest Winner

Gabriel Chacón wins a copy of Techarí by Ojos de Brujo. Congratulations!

The rest of you: thanks for participating! You can always grab a copy of Techarí the traditional way, the album is released in the US next tuesday (Feburary 20th). European flamenkillo fans can order right away, through iTunes or Amazon.

And I'd like to make a service announcement: the silence on La Onda (caused by a fantastic skiing holiday together with El Guiri ;)) will probably continue for some time. I'm moving out to live with my novia, and you'll understand there won't be much time left for blogging. After things have settled down, I'll be back in full force!

Site RSS Feed

All problems related to the RSS Feed should be solved now. Seems the feed URL changed after we switched to the new Blogger.

Other feed-related news: you can now receive new posts on La Onda in your mailbox. If you want to listen to the songs, you still have to come here though ;)

And if you want to keep track of the comments to a certain post, you can click the "Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom)" link at the bottom of the page. So if you asked us something, the comments feed will tell you when we reply!

La Onda Updated

We're back, and better than ever. Let me explain some of the changes:

  • All posts are now filed in categories. At the bottom of each post you'll see the categories for that post, and on your right there's a nice colorful overview of all categories. The bigger & the more red the name, the more posts it contains.

  • El Guiri, a good friend of mine, will be helping me out on the album reviews. You'll love his spontaneous writing style!

  • And some minor design adjustments (like the expandable archive)..
Let me know if things don't work on your browser or OS.. Or if you think of features you'd like to see on La Onda.

Moving to Blogger Beta!

Dear readers,

During next week I'll be moving the site to the new version of Blogger (now still in Beta). So things will look a bit weird until then. Afterwards the site will hopefully still be the same, just a twitch here and there. No need to update your favorites or anything :)

See you then!

Update: looks like I have to start from scratch on the design, and learn to work with XML in the meantime. So this might take some time, sorry.

New Additions

Hey there faithful reader,

I'd like to explain some recent additions to the site.

First, the grey last.fm chart (in the sidebar on your right) shows you the tracks I've been playing on my computer here in Belgium. A click takes you to my listening profile. And if you add your own profile, I can see what my visitors are listening to. La Onda Tropical goes Web 2.0 ;)

Recently two new sites decided to syndicate articles from La Onda Tropical to their own pages: Reggaeton World is the multi-language reference for reggaeton-related information in Europe, and the infamous Blogcritics site is a gigantic database of music, movies, books, entertainment & much more.
And if you want an easily digestable (and accurate) overview of news on Latin America, The Latin Americanist is the blog you need. Be sure to check out these great sites!

At the bottom of each post, you had a link to the comments, and a button to e-mail the post to a friend. Now I've added a section for links to the article from other sites - so you can read what other bloggers think about La Onda Tropical. And if you have a del.icio.us account (another very handy Web 2.0 site), you can add the post to your bookmarks, and tag it.

And lastly: I'm going on holiday next week, so don't expect much posting!

Welcome to La Onda

After a bit of restyling and rethinking, the former Latino Muziek Blog is now La Onda Tropical. Onda literally means wave, but in a very broad way: it can be the feeling something gives you, or a new hype, or an underlying meaning. Something in the air you can't quite grasp, but know it's there: la onda.

We're now posting in English. There are many reasons for this, most importantly because 25% of our readers live in the US, and another 50% should know a little English. We're an mp3 blog now, too. This means that we're not gonna bring you a bi-weekly playlist anymore, but we'll update more regularly, with a couple of songs each post. The playlist on the right now serves as an overview for recently posted songs.

Hopefully you'll enjoy the new concept, all comments are greatly appreciated!
